There is some overlap between content on this page and content found on the Citizenship Benefits page.
Just like being a citizen of the US entitles you to certain rights, being a citizen of Italy entitles you to certain rights. This is not intended to be exhaustive — merely a short list to help you understand some of what you are entitled to.
Rights of an Italian Citizen
- The right to vote for the lower chamber of Parliament (the House of Deputies) starting at age 18 and the upper chamber of Parliament (the Senate) starting at age 25.
- While living abroad, one also gets to vote on national referendums and a special representative for Italian citizens living in North America.
- One will receive a ballot from the consulate to be returned to the consulate.
- While living in Italy, you have the right to free, taxpayer-funded health care and education.
- The ability (not really a right) to travel to countries where US travelers are not permitted.
Rights of an EU Citizen
- The right to live and work in any EU member state with your family.
- The right to seek assistance at any EU member state’s consulate if you entered the country on your Italian passport.
